Spring Scalp in Huntsville & Madison, AL
A low first mow of the year that clears away winter's dead growth and lets the sun warm the soil, so your lawn greens up sooner.
Overview
A spring scalp is a one-time, extra-low mow done in early spring that removes the dead, tan top growth left on warm-season grass after winter. Clearing that layer lets sunlight reach the soil and new shoots, which helps Bermuda and Zoysia lawns green up faster and more evenly. It is not used on Tall Fescue.
North Alabama note: Bermuda and Zoysia are the most common lawns around Huntsville, and both go fully dormant and tan in winter. Late frosts are common here into March, so the timing of a spring scalp matters more than the calendar date.

Spring Scalp: Frequently Asked Questions
When should a lawn be scalped in North Alabama?
The window is usually March into early April, after the threat of a hard freeze has passed and just as the lawn begins to wake up. Scalping too early can expose the lawn to a late frost, and scalping after it is fully green stresses the grass. We watch the weather and schedule accordingly.
Which grasses should be scalped?
Scalping is for warm-season grasses that go dormant in winter, mainly Bermuda and Zoysia. It should not be done on Tall Fescue, which stays green through winter and is damaged by being mowed that low. If you are not sure what grass you have, we will identify it during your estimate.
Will scalping hurt my lawn?
Done at the right time on the right grass, no. The lawn looks rough and tan for a short while, then greens up as temperatures climb. The harm comes from scalping the wrong grass type or doing it in the heat of summer, which is why timing matters.
Do I need to do this every year?
Many Bermuda and Zoysia lawns benefit from it each spring, especially if dead growth built up over winter. It pairs well with the start of Basic Lawn Care, and with Core Aeration later in spring if your soil is compacted.
