Monkey Grass Pruning in Huntsville & Madison, AL

Last year's worn foliage cut back in late winter, so the new growth comes in clean and green.

Overview

Monkey grass pruning is cutting liriope back close to the ground once a year so fresh foliage replaces the old. By the end of winter the leaves are usually brown at the tips, flattened, or spotted. We cut the clumps down in late winter, before the new shoots come up, and remove the clippings so borders and beds start spring clean.

North Alabama note: Liriope is one of the most common border plants around Huntsville, lining walks, driveways, and beds. Winters here are mild, so new shoots can start early in a warm year. We watch the weather and cut before they do.

Monkey Grass Pruning: Frequently Asked Questions

When should monkey grass be cut back?

Once a year, in late winter. Around Huntsville that usually means late January through February, before new growth starts in early March. The timing matters. Once the new shoots are up, cutting clips their tips, and those leaves stay blunt and brown at the ends for the rest of the year.

Does monkey grass have to be cut back every year?

The plant will live without it, but most borders look much better for it. Liriope is evergreen, so the old leaves stay in place and show their winter damage until they are removed. A yearly cut also clears out spotted and diseased foliage before the new growth comes in.

How short do you cut it?

To about two to three inches. That removes the old foliage without cutting into the crown, which is where the new growth comes from. Cutting lower than that can damage the plant and slow it down.

Is mondo grass cut back the same way?

Mondo grass is often called monkey grass too, but it is a different plant with finer, darker leaves. It grows slowly and usually does not need a yearly cut. We trim it only when winter damage calls for it, at the same time of year.

What if the window has passed?

If new growth is already up, it is usually better to leave the plants alone than to cut them late. We can clean out dead leaves by hand where that is practical and put the property on the schedule for next winter.
