Core Aeration in Huntsville & Madison, AL
Relieve packed-down clay so your lawn's roots can breathe, drink, and grow deeper.
Overview
Core aeration is the process of pulling small plugs of soil out of a lawn to relieve compaction. The openings let air, water, and nutrients move down to the roots instead of running off the surface. It is for lawns on heavy clay, lawns with thin or struggling turf, and yards that see a lot of foot traffic.
North Alabama note: Most yards around Huntsville sit on dense red clay that packs down hard under mowers, foot traffic, and summer storms. Compacted clay sheds water instead of absorbing it, which is why aeration makes such a visible difference here.

Core Aeration: Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to aerate in North Alabama?
Aerate when your grass is actively growing so it recovers quickly. For Bermuda and Zoysia that is late spring into early summer. For Tall Fescue it is early fall, which also sets up overseeding. We will recommend the right window for your lawn.
How do I know if my lawn needs aeration?
Common signs are water that puddles or runs off instead of soaking in, soil that is hard to push a screwdriver into, thin grass in high-traffic areas, and turf that struggles even with regular care. Heavy clay soil, which is typical here, compacts more easily than sandy soil.
What happens to the plugs left on the lawn?
The small soil plugs are left on the surface on purpose. They break down within a couple of weeks with rain and mowing, returning soil and organic matter to the lawn. Raking them up is not necessary.
Should I seed after aerating?
For Tall Fescue lawns, yes. Fall aeration followed by overseeding is one of the best ways to thicken a fescue lawn, because the seed settles into the open holes. Ask about pairing aeration with our Seeding / Repairs service.
