Hydrangea & Lily Pruning in Huntsville & Madison, AL
Hydrangeas and lilies pruned by type and by season, because a cut at the wrong time costs you next year's flowers.
Overview
Hydrangea and lily pruning is seasonal cutting back that is timed to each plant. Some hydrangeas set next year's flower buds in late summer, so a winter trim removes the blooms. Others flower on new growth and are cut in late winter. Lilies need their leaves until they yellow. We identify what you have and prune each plant on its own schedule.
North Alabama note: Oakleaf hydrangea is native to Alabama and is the state wildflower, and bigleaf hydrangeas grow in beds all over Huntsville. Both set their buds on old wood. Late freezes here in March and early April can damage those buds, so we leave winter-killed stems in place until the plant leafs out and shows what is alive.

Hydrangea & Lily Pruning: Frequently Asked Questions
When should hydrangeas be pruned?
It depends on the type. Bigleaf hydrangeas (the blue and pink mopheads) and oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on last year's stems, so they are pruned in summer, right after they flower and before August. Panicle hydrangeas such as Limelight and smooth hydrangeas such as Annabelle bloom on new growth, so they are cut back in late winter, usually February into early March around Huntsville.
Why did my hydrangea not bloom this year?
The most common cause is pruning at the wrong time. A bigleaf or oakleaf hydrangea that is cut back in fall, winter, or spring loses the flower buds it has already made. A hard late freeze after the buds swell can do the same thing. Too much shade is the other usual reason.
When are lilies cut back?
In two steps. Spent blooms and flower stalks are removed after flowering in summer so the bed stays neat. The leaves are left alone while they are green, because they feed the plant for next year. Once the foliage has yellowed and died down, usually after the first frosts, it is cut back close to the ground. This applies to daylilies and to true lilies.
Can you make an overgrown hydrangea smaller?
Yes, within limits. On hydrangeas that bloom on old stems, we take out the oldest canes at the base and shorten the rest right after bloom, which reduces the size without giving up next year's flowers. If a plant is far too large for its spot, moving it or replacing it with a smaller variety is often the better answer.
