Old Mulch Removal in Huntsville & Madison, AL

Clear out years of built-up mulch so your beds drain properly and fresh mulch looks the way it should.

Overview

Old mulch removal is stripping out mulch that has built up, matted down, or faded before new material is installed. When mulch is piled on year after year it gets too deep, sheds water, and can smother roots and rot the base of shrubs and trees. Removing the excess resets the bed so a fresh layer goes down at the right depth.

North Alabama note: In our humid climate, thick layers of old mulch stay wet and can mat into a dense crust, especially in shaded beds. Resetting the depth every few years keeps beds draining well in heavy North Alabama rain.

Old Mulch Removal: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to remove old mulch every time?

No. A thin layer of broken-down mulch is good for the soil and can be topped off. Removal makes sense when mulch has built up to several inches, has matted into a crust that sheds water, is piled against trunks or siding, or when you are switching to a different material or color.

How deep should mulch be?

Most beds do best with two to three inches. Deeper than that and water struggles to reach the roots. If you can dig down and find several inches of old mulch, it is time to take some out before adding more.

Why is mulch against tree trunks a problem?

Mulch piled up around a trunk holds moisture against the bark, which invites rot, insects, and roots growing in the wrong place. We pull mulch back so the base of each tree and shrub can breathe.

Can you install new mulch the same day?

In most cases, yes. Removal and installation are often scheduled together so your beds are never left bare. Ask about our Mulch Installation and Pine Straw Installation services.
