French Drains in Huntsville & Madison, AL

Give standing water somewhere to go, so your yard dries out and your foundation stays protected.

Overview

A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that collects water from soggy ground and carries it away to a better spot. It is used where water pools after rain, where a low area never dries out, or where runoff heads toward a foundation. We look at how water moves across your property before recommending where a drain should go.

North Alabama note: North Alabama's red clay absorbs water slowly, and our summer storms can drop a lot of rain in a short time. That combination is why standing water is one of the most common yard problems in the Huntsville area.

French Drains: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a French drain?

Signs include puddles that linger for days after rain, a squishy low spot that never firms up, water running toward the house, or grass that keeps dying in the same wet area. We will look at the slope and soil and tell you honestly whether a drain, regrading, or something simpler is the right fix.

Why does water pool in my yard?

Around Huntsville the usual cause is heavy clay soil, which drains slowly, combined with low spots or a grade that sends runoff the wrong way. New-construction lots are especially prone to it because the soil has been compacted by equipment.

Will a French drain tear up my yard?

Installing one means digging a trench, so there is some disruption along its path. We keep the work area as tight as we can and restore the lawn or bed over the drain when we finish.

Is a French drain the only option?

No. Some drainage problems are better solved by filling and leveling low spots or correcting the grade. If that is the case for your yard, we may recommend our Lawn Leveling service instead of, or along with, a drain.
